5 Bad Things About a Job
Without a doubt, every average person needs a job. However, once you learn how to build wealth, it’s hard to see the true value and purpose of a job. With that being said, let’s cover five bad things about jobs and why they can be so problematic.
1. It’s the Worst Way to Make Money
First and foremost, one bad thing about a job is it’s the worst way to get rich or wealthy. Unfortunately, as we grow up and learn how to survive on our own, we are lead to believe working a job is the best way to make money. However, a job may the best way to get started making money but a long way away from being the best source for building wealth.
How to Get Rich
I know you might be wondering if a job is the worst way to get money, what is the best way? I’m glad you asked. The best way to build wealth is through owning assets. To learn all about this, visit this post which goes more in-depth on the topic.
As a quick reference, assets are things that pay you money. For example, owning a business that is profitable or renting out an investment property that generates a positive cash flow are assets. Although those assets may seem expensive, we have put together a list of affordable online assets you can start learning about today.
The Purpose of a Job
After hearing how bad we believe jobs are, you might be wondering, what is a job really good for? If you had to work a job, it should be used for getting stability in your life or with your bills. Once stability is accomplished, you can still stick around for raises or promotions but, those things should not be your primary focus if you want financial freedom. As previously mentioned, by focusing more on acquiring assets, you can earn money regardless of how many hours you work in a day. A job is the worst way to get paid because you only make money when you put in more hours.
2. Jobs Take Too Much Time
As if not making enough money at work wasn’t bad enough, jobs also take up too much of your time. In other words, a job will take away most of your life if you let it. Just think about, when will you get to stop working 40 or more hours a week? After you hit your 60’s? Even when you hit retirement age, you still may not make enough money to support your desired lifestyle. If you don’t make retirement income, you may go right back to trading your time again. It’s like a never-ending cycle, one more commonly known as “The rat race”.
Working Towards Retirement
I’m sure it wasn’t your life goal to wait until you hit your 60’s to finally settle down and enjoy yourself. Unfortunately, with the common goal of hitting retirement, you may risk spending half your life or more trying to get a pension without realizing that, it’s a terrible trade-off. If you have not learned this already, TIME is your most valuable asset so, let’s make sure you’re on a path to use it in a way that best serves you and your family.
3. You Can Be Let Go
This goes without saying, I’m sure you’ve heard the stories of people getting laid off. Although everyone has not experienced getting laid, we know that it happens. A job can let you go without much warning, leaving you in a real bind if you’re not prepared. As a result, it’s great that you are now learning how to build wealth instead of depending too much on a job that can replace you at any time.
In the Military
I know in the military, in order to continue serving, you must meet a minimum career progression or you can be discharged. For example, in most active duty military branches, you would be discharged if you were an E-4 for more than 8 years in the military because that would be considered reaching high year tenure. In order to stay in you would have needed to earn the E-5 rank by eight years to remain active. Although you may want to get promoted or tried your best to reach a higher rank, even in the military, you will be replaced.
4. You have Limited Vacation
Another reason why jobs are bad is because you only get a set amount of vacation. This means if you want a lot of time off in a particular year for events or just as a break for yourself, you are limited to what the job will give you. Moreover, it may also feel like you have just enough vacation time to give yourself a break. But, what if your friends or family want you to attend an event or join them on a special day? Since you work a job, you may have to say, “I can’t go because I do not have any days available to take off”. Although that reasoning may be the truth, it’s time you understand the true value of a job and start working on getting the time you deserve for yourself and your family.
Working on Holidays
As if not having enough vacation time per year wasn’t enough, depending on your job, you may even have to work holidays! Although this is mostly depressing when you have or had plans to spend time with someone, it usually always feels inconvenient to have to work on a day that everyone else is getting off. I’m sure you know someone who’s had to work on Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years. It never feels good unless you’ve psyched yourself out to think it’s ok. Let me guess, you get extra pay for losing unforgettable moments with your family and friends.
5. You May Need to Do More than Your Job
Lastly, when working a job, you may need to do more than your job just to secure your position or qualify for more pay. In most job positions, the entry-level may work for just starting out but eventually, you may need more money from the job via a raise or hope for a new position. Well, unfortunately, you may not be able to get that raise or new position unless you go to school or surpass other workers in your field.
Limited Availability
Although we can understand why things work this way, it is still unfortunate that there is not enough room for everyone to progress at their jobs. For example, if there were five workers at an entry-level job and one new position opened for the next tier above, who gets picked? The person with the higher education, the one who is the right gender or race, the one with the best work effort, the one who is politically correct or the person who has a closer relationship with the boss? As you can imagine, all of the above are reasons why one person can get the job over another. Regardless of whether it’s right or wrong, it happens. So the question is, what are you willing to do to get what you want? Will that be enough?
Conclusion
Although we’ve listed several issues with working a job, I’m sure you understand on the contrary why a job still has value. The purpose of this post was to raise awareness of options outside of working a job. If you are someone who is truly happy in your workplace, then there is nothing wrong with it. However, if you are someone who is inspired to reach above-average financial gains then, depending on the job in the long term will likely not be your answer.
